AS FINE ART" Ancient |
"Love" A Hawaiian Dancer portrays "love" in sign language. Created on silk by Helen Carkin in the ancient Javanese method of Batik. |

The ancient Javanese method of making batik is done by successive waxing and dyeing of the silk material on which the picture is produced. At no time is the color applied in a method other than the complete immersion in the cold dye bath; thus the colors are always analogous to one another. The hot wax is applied with a specially designed tjanting tool to achieve as fine a line as possible. This method is very time consuming and tedious, in some cases taking months to produce one piece. Every piece is an original. It cannot be duplicated in any way.
"No hidden messages. My aim is to produce a piece of art in good design and color by this method of batik with a subject that pleases the viewer each time he sees it, Great art should be more than a one-shot offering." Helen Carkin (1917-2002) |
